Hello all,

I have been wanting to catch some Lake Trout and have been looking into what I may need to do so.
Would be fishing in Haliburton for them.

What I have been told is that you need to troll for them deeeeeep in the lakes or Jig for them... but I have never tried so not sure where they are in the lake.

My options for purchase is:
Fish finder - was looking at the protable one that uses AA batteries.

and

Steel Line - which means I buy a new real

or
Manual Down riggers - I am fishing out of a 12 foot boat

What are you guys using to catch them in the summer, or do you even bother?

I have a small boat and I use a portable down rigger (cost about 100.00) to catch them. You will also need a fish finder to see where they are and at what depth. You can use spoons, rapala's to catch them.

Portable fish finder would be a great idea. I planned out a day last August and got to a Haliburton lake, started putting my gear into the canoe and was excited to try out my new portable fish finder. Unfortunately, I had grabbed the wrong model and it wasn't portable. Ended up fishing mostly for bass.

Williams wobblers are supposed to be excellent lake trout spoons. I would be trying minnows too rather than worms, and crayfish might work well if you can catch some at the lake you'll be fishing.

portable fishing finder is a must, need to know where they are.

Lure: Williams wobblers / Little cloe, and Syclones spoon wise.
Spinner also work

To get the Lure down I use a Dipsy Diver cost $17 at Crappy Tire. You can also use Jet diver, Pink Diver or some other type of Diver. Like I said Dipsys are about $17 @ Canadain Tire, grab a Size #0 its 4" round, it commes with a Chart in the pack letting you know how far back you run it for how deep you want the lure to run. Look them up on youtube, they are a cheap Alternative to Downriggers, Personaly I have 3 since I have lost afew on bottom.

How much do I need to spend on a fish finder. would a Hummingbird 110 do the trick?

I was looking at the divers, but that will mean I need to buy a new real with a line counter?

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

Measure your line in a feild and mark it a intervals using float stops you could also use leadcore which is colour coded and will carry baits deeper

If you do alot of trolling a larger screen size will be better I have an old Si Tech paper graph that is more detailed than most new LCD screens I can actually see a Lake Trout swim up from off the bottom right through a bait pile and watch it hit my lure before it even hits it.

Personally I don't believe that a colour screen is all that important and you may even find that you can see a black & white (gray scale screen) much better in direct sunlight.

I would go the manual down rigger route and look for the one with the largest diameter drum size 6", 8",10", 12" they are easier to hand bomb the ball back up to the surface the smaller ones are a real pain in the bum at the end of the day.

You can clip on any of your favourite spoons or plugs direct and also attatch an Apex Spoon that slides freely down the fishing untill it finds the apex (bend in your line) it has a crazy action that will entice way more strikes they are very popular on Lake Nipigon.

Like others have said you may even find Lake Trout stacked up suspended mid lake over sunken islands & springs,etc...Lay out a marker bouy, anchor and jig with big 2-11/2oz bucktail jigs and Smack Um at times! :)
