Is the R Type from Rapala any good. Looking at it side by side looks similar to the Classic Drifter

Paul if you're looking for a float rod the raven matrix is solid for $150. Nice and soft so it loads well with 4 g floats.

So I went with Sail as they gave me 15% off the road and reel.

Reel Okuma Raw II
ROD Shimano Convergence 12'6 4-8lb IM-7

Paul, the r-type is a 4.5inch, classic is 4.75 inch and the shift is a 5inch offset. for rod id go with a streamside best 100-130 bucks you'll spend on a float rod, soft tip but also enough backbone for salmon and large steelhead. and lifetime over the counter warranty, which cant be beat.

James I had the R-type and didn't like how it felt.

I called around and couldn't find a place in Ottawa that had the streamline rod.

I got the stuff in prov post.

Got mine from al flaherty's. Shipping is pretty cheap. They have the raw ii for $170.

I have the Okuma Raw II and the Shimano Claris 13' great combo. The reel flows amazingly great startup.

I bought the same exact setup, about $300 new with line too. Clean the bearings and it will spin even better! The clarus feels fairly quite light and crisp with im8 graphite, similar to streamsides rods. Better than most cheap rods with im6 that feel heavy and noodly.

I'm pumped can't wait to get hook on.

What did you do for line. The guys at sail helped me out and set me up with, 17lb backing of suffix elite to fill the spool then about 150lbs of, seaguar invizx 6lb fluoro

Imo
Dacron line for backing.
just curious why fluoro not reg mono as your main line

that's what their most knowledgeable person in pinning suggested.. Im new at it so just went with it..

Yikes, take it back and complain... flouro as a main line for pinning is a bad idea... because you are float fishing you will likely have some line on the water (especially when you are learning to control the pin). Flourocarbon as a line will actually sink; this becomes an issue when setting the hook, mending line and controlling your drift.

Mono is by far the best centerpin line at the moment (in my opinion, guys like braid but...) mono will float, it has the stretch factor which is nice for adsorbing shock on big fish and light line. The line is also translucence so for the most part fish will be unable to see it.

Everything else seems good for a beginning setup.

The 17lb backing is fine in my opinion. Realistically you will never touch it. Like you said it's just a filler, I would go with a 8-12lb main line, I fish 12lb main but it's all personal preference
