Ya man, I love it, being able to see them swim up and grab your bait is so cool!
I did that a bit but mostly the areas I fished were too deep and normally less than two feet of vis. One notable day they were cruising right under the ice in 12' of water and my buddy was hooking one after another on spey flies less than a foot under the ice.

Ya, the times I got real close to the current, it was very murky, I fished mainly 6-10'. Those flies work awesome for them under the ice eh?! Best part is, most guys don't even think about trying them for ice fishing!

The tribs I fished often run with some color and didn't clear up until huron froze right over. I only fished very close or on the open lake so no current other than lake swells. Yeah almost all guys were plunking roe, while that accounted for some of my fish I got more jigging. I had so much fun getting them through the ice I'm not that excited to combat fish the open water this spring lol

Ice bows rock!

Lol I hear ya man, not really itching to river fish at all to be honest, I'm having such a blast with the ice! Most of my fish actually hit the roe, I run a double setup, fly on top, roe on bottom, attract with the fly and catch with roe but some days they don't even look at that roe. Nice fish BTW, chrome as can be!

Well it's obviously not an epic fish picture....

My buddy and I hiked a couple miles into a spot where we had caught some nice fish the weekend prior. To avoid taking an entire day hiking to it we decided to cross the entire spanse of the river if it allowed us to do so. This section of the river is only a couple miles from one of the lakes that feed it. The lake was just frozen as we go to our spot. We found an area where it was deep but shallow enough with little current to make it across a large spans of river to the other side. No problem going in.

Leaving was another story, Hours later as the sun was in full force I mentioned that the lake is melting for sure and that our way in may be a little deeper. Thats exactly what happened. An inch deeper and the water would have went over the waders. Tip toed the entire way and even floated for a few seconds. It was a spance of about the size of a football field. Never again.

The photo was taken as I assessed the area in the middle of the river on a small sand hill before delving back into the depths on our way out.

The crap we do for a tug......and on top of everything we both got skunked. Haha.

^ this story terrifies me. Unless i've seen someone cross previously or can see the bottom, crossing aint happening.
