Good day on the river. Water was clear but fishing was good. Rain should make it better. Mid week fishing is excellent, no one around!

Nice fish!
Thanks for the report.

I too had the pleasure to get out today .... and cetainly agree with you (MID WEEK) fishing is the best, IF you have the opportunity.

I dont want to start my own topic ... so with your permission, could I add my humble pics to this post?
(Would compliment the "Mid Week" feel)

lol u dont need to ask, just post em. More pics per thread the better, less work.

Beef likes to mention "pushing" people in the water for a swim.
I would'nt want him upset at me.

Little Spunky Fella .... First of Day;

This one landed and flopped all over the clay/mud (Terrible looking shot)
However, splashed some water on him/her (?) and cleaned off nicely.

I am well aware of their protective slime (Parasites, Temp Control etc) ... and took care not to rub.

Was 100% fiesty and bolted like a rocket when released!

All the fish were exceptionally Strong and Vibraint.

Ps; My lager one of the day, didnt get pic .... Took me for a slide, run, stumble down the river. Too far from camera (in Bag).
I lost (3) Big ones - ALL SPIT HOOKS!

Was just bottom bouncing Chinny Roe, on a Light Set up (6lb Mono).
Hooks were new and sharp - I just didnt set well enough.

Awesome. Looks like a good start for steelheading
The Notty dropped enough today to allow for wading to the holes( land owners don't appreciate people cutting across their property to access the water)
The law states that land owners do not own the river bed , so there fore if you can walk through the river to a hole then you are not trespassing .
So today my buddy ( Ray ) and myself took a day off to fish the Notty and we were rewarded

Look at all the steelhead in this thread! ive only had two on this year so far and lost em both on the first jump. Im gonna have to break that trend this weekend.

Hey Notta

There used to be a fishing show years ago, it was a local guy from Etobicoke. I forgot the name right now but he had gone to the Pine River and said that land owners don't own the river but do own the land under the river. He warned people that you are technically trespassing if wading in the water. So he suggested first asking for permission to fish on their "property". Unless the laws have changed, does anyone else know this for a fact?

The other thing about wading in the water is that you may be stepping all over the Redds. Is there a way to tell where they are since the fish have covered up their eggs?

The Pine river , the Boyne , Wilmot to name a few are typically owned by the land owner the bottom and all .
The Nottawasaga , Saugeen for example are called " navicleable ? " rivers , therefore the land owner owns the land to the rivers edge and NOT the bottom of the river .
We have verified this with CO's and police to be aware of our rights as fishermen . We have been tested by land owners in the past and they have been set straight by the O.P.P. officers who were called to investigate allegations that we were trespassing on their lands. You can ask for permission as well.

Yes. They are a large clean white patch of rocks that the female has cleaned off by brushing her tail. The eggs tend to be at the back. Usually looks exactly like this

That's awesome I always stay out of the rivers, not willing to take any chances of killing the eggs of future fish I have'nt been able to catch.......lol. Usually I just wade in deep enough to release salmon and thats it. Thanks.

Cool, learned something new. I been avoiding the western rivers believing that they are all non-accessable. I know land owners who have had bad experiences with anglers walking up off the river onto their backyard picnic. They obviously did not have a good impression of anglers, no one would.

Thanks for clearing that up. Great pics guys.

Grubman.
To add to this, lately there has been a huge surge in anglers coming down the river in boats and canoes. They put in" up" river at a public area like a bridge or park and go down river stopping at any given spot to fish . They tie the boat off in the river, remembering not to step on shore , and stand to fish and then back in the boat and on to the next hole. It's a great way to cover lots of water and access spots that are unaccessible by walking . We also have two propertys we fish with full permission from the owners and it's suprising how many anglers just totally ignore a NO TRESPASSING sign and walk through anyway . Some owners just don't want anyone anywhere near the property ,in the water or not . We've had large rocks tossed around us to scare us off , acid rock pumped through large speakers at full volume , it can get crazy . We simply avoid these people , there's lots of other places to fish . Enjoy fishing , always look out for yourself and be careful not to step on others toes

I was told about the Grand River and the Grand River Rafting Company. You can raft down the Grand but you're not allowed to stop on the shore b/c the land is private. So same as what you are saying, stay in the water. I don't have the $ to spare for a trip yet. But it seems like a cool way of fishing.

The only question is how do you get back to your car/starting point?.......lol.

Thanks for the tips. Nice pic.

Well, as I said on another thread, I have a canoe and would like to find an experienced steelheader to fish the Notty with once the water subsides a bit.
