Hi everyone, firstly I would like to introduce myself, my name is Zuhair and I live in York. I have been aiming to catch a bass for almost 2 years now. After days and days of research and learning about their behaviour and habitat, this summer I finally pulled my first one out! It was at Topham Pond on jane and eglinton. The park workers said it was restocked with some pike and bass this year 8) . So far, I caught and have seen people catch brown bullheads, crappies, bass, pike and carp.
In mid-july I reached the pond at 10am and had no luck until roughly noon time. I was at the northwest portion of the pond flipping a 3 inch black tube jig. It was time to take a break, so I just flipped the jig about one meter away from shore and just left it there. I was about to take a drink when I realised that the line was moving away. At first, I thought it was it was just wind and water current that is moving the line away but surely, after the line moved 3 feet away in a matter of few seconds I knew I had a fish on. I set the hook and pulled out a nice 11 inch largie . It made my day, even though it was a small bass. The feeling of catching a bass for the first time is really something else. Sadly, the bass died shortly after I took the hook out because it swallowed it.
Decent bass for that small pond...
Used the black tube jig texas style!
I also caught a lot of crappie there. There is a certain location where the crappie hang around. Its not too far away from where I caught the bass. Just as you walk along the north walkway heading west of the pond, at midway there is a small pathway that takes you to a small fishable opening (not too many people know about this spot). Casting a very small yellow or white coloured rubber jig with a small float will give you a high chance of success for the crappie there. Worms also work great, but the brown bullheads always steal it. The biggest crappie I caught there was about 7-8 inches.
As for the carp, the best location is southwest of the pond. Used a piece of bread and casted without a float, caught two 3 pound carp 2 weeks ago. I didn’t catch a pike yet, however I know that there is a 40 inch pike swimming around in that pond. Get some minnows, and fish from the bridge(mid way along the south walkway) of the pond to get some success with pike.
If you decide to fish there, I wish you good luck!
