Does anyone use a boat style (not a cone shaped) transducer for ice fishing? Ive heard of guys using old tip ups and other types of rigs like that anyone ever done this? I just bought a portable humminbird sonar but it comes with the boat style transducer not the ice fishing one. Thanks guys

Humminbird happens to sell a transducer for the very purpose of ice fishing with regular fish finders. It's a cheap alternative to buying a flasher if you already own one of their fish finders http://ca.humminbird.com/products/314001?product_id=56705ccd03fc815f9a883ebcb7c064a7

yea inno about those, but i have heard of guys using tip ups to make a rig that will hold the existing transducer straight and allow it to get an accurate reading. Ive never seen a picture of one though im hoping maybe someone has done this before and i can save that 100 bucks for gas for a trip up north to ice some trout! haha

something like this will work, not mine but i had a similar setup forst year ice fishing.

i have used my boat one for 10 years just tape or elastic it to a long tip up stand and make sure u have it pointed flat like u would on your boat u will know u have it right when u mark your jig or spreader. move what ever u r using up and down it will mark like a run on m if u dont see it just keep moveing the transducer till u do smaller baits u might have to turn the sensitivity up high i have done this always worked i live in barrie on simcoe and fish 130f commonly never caught a fish i have not marked

go to chad at rainbow sports and see his jerry rigged holder

Theres lots of different ways to rig a skimmer style transducer up for ice fishing. Its what I use and it works great.

How do you do it?

x2!! im heading out to simcoe tomorrow and am gonna try and rig something up for it but if not its not the end of the world my buddy will be there with his. but i really wanna avoid paying 80 bucks for an ice transducer id much rather make a rig

the main difference is the cone angle, with boat transducer it will scan big area around being it's 60 degrees, the ice transducer is only 20 or less. so when you mark fish or weeds it could be 30 yards away from you using regular transducer, where with ice transducer it's a couple of steps. good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes.

i'll put the degrees to perspective....

30 FOW - coverage area (diameter)
8° - 4ft
20° - 10.6ft
60° - 34.6ft

100 FOW - coverage area (diameter)
8° - 14ft
20° - 35ft
60° - 115ft

ok thanks, i will prolly end up getting a cone transducer eventually i just wanted to rig something that would work in the mean time and i think i have lol I used a tire and some zip ties ill have a pic of it in use in my report from tomorrows fishin! Once the big lake freezes ill need to get a proper set up though if i wanna get into some big lakers !

I used a skimmer style one for ice fishing for the first time this weekend. Used zip ties and pipe insulation for a float and 3 zip ties to get the ducer hanging right. I got a bird 550 for 99 bucks, has a single beam 20 degree ducer. Seemed to work well after I got the hang of it, had to adjust the transducer so it would hang flush.

Kinda hard to explain how mine is rigged up. Basically a piece of rod with a hook on one end and the transducer mounted on the other end.

My buddy rigged his up last year with a piece of coat hanger and some electrical tape.... He has to play with his a bit when getting setup to get it to mark his jig, but it does work fine.

I dont wanna jack your thread but I have a lowrance 96x that came with my boat that I upgraded. Is there a way to rig this pup up for ice fishing?

As I see it, the wider angle could be an advantage for some types of fish at least. I think that trout would easily wander around a 100ft or so circle. So, if you were paying close attention you see them coming earlier rather than later.---my 2cents.

it is better to search fish, but when you find it it's not as accurate as transducers with smaller angle; ie you will never know if the fish is near your lure or passing by somewhere 50ft off to the side.

I guess what I was trying to say is that, for fish that move/roam around a lot, if it's within 50 ft it's 'near your lure'.
