How was everyone's opener?
It was my first experience with a spring trout opener and well...... I hated it.
The crowds were unbelievable. Guys were stacked at every pool.
I ended up going through 4 creeks the whole morning. Same thing everywhere.
The gin clear super low water didn't help. Also saw lots of fish get taken out and kept. Nothing wrong with that, but considering the creeks hold wild populations of steelhead (not stocked)... that never sits well with me. Everyone is entitled to keep up to the limit though.
One thing that really pissed me off were these two fly anglers that thought they were so pro. One of them hooked into a buck and I do not exaggerate when I say that they were fighting this thing for 15 minutes. It wasn't even that big. There were over 6 guys drifting this pool and this dude is playing this fish to death while everyone waits annoyed. It was NOT necessary. The fish was just sitting on the bottom and this guy is just holding his rod there like it's the fight of his life. If you're going to do that.. you might as well keep it. The fish had NO chance of survival. They then had to lift it out of the water for several minutes taking all these pics. They then threw it back in...where it just floated downstream and some other random guy picks it up and slices its throat and throws the fish on the rocks cause he didn't catch anything. End rant.
I did end up getting into a few fish. Some of the hardest fighting fish I've had the pleasure of hooking into. Amazing aerials and powerful runs. There are still fish to be had...so get out there before they go back into the lake.
