VERY GREEN!

Hey guys, want to start out buy saying Im very new. Fishing outside of meaford Ont. Iv had my 16 foot Grew for years. This year I am determined to catch a fish. So, I bought a 2.5 kicker Suzuki (GREAT MOTOR!!) two 10 inch riggers, poles, spoons, hummingbird fish finder, BUT no idea what Im doing!lol


Iv been out 6 nights so far, nothing!


I'm out with the other guys around 90 feet of water, I see alot on the bottom ( they seem right at the bottom??), what depth should I be at? I get conflicting advice!


If im at 80- 90 feet of water should I be in the middle? Bottom?


Any advice on the spoons or ????


Anyadvice would be awesome!! Iv used the search but nothing really for downrigging!

I'm a firm believer that wobbling plugs can outfish spoons! Some real good ones are the storm hotntot, jointed Rapala, Rapala Taildancer and Kwikfish. Oh ya, don't worry about your lure being near the bottom, i'm sure they'll come up and grab it. Based on my exciting experience with lake trout and chinook salmon!

Oh ya...........are you sure your not marking your cannonballs on the humminbird?! I remember Darryl Choronzey saying something about the fishery not being too good in Owen Sound. Maybe you could come to the GTA and try the same thing. There already catching some Atlantic's, Chinooks and browns from shore at Port Credit.

Just returning from Georgian Bay (Owen Sound) down rigging . We worked similar fish marks at 100 foot region and caught salmon at 64 FT down. ( The thermal cline)

I've rigged for 18 years and the trick to it is finding first the thermal cline and second the colours to run. It doesn't seem to matter if it's a body bait or a spoon provided you have the right colour. (My humble opinion of course.)

The thermal cline allows baitfish to swim in the temperature of comfort while the salmon and trout enjoy the 10 degree lower temperature. Fish sitting on bottom don't usually strike as they are not feeding down that deep. Find the feeding fish by looking for hooks under the bait fish on your fish finder. Work those clouds of bait fish!

I suggest the following spoons : North Port Nailers White/Green or Silver/Blue, Nasty Boys Silver/light green, Andy Reekers combos. Note I can't find Andy reekers in Canadian stores any longer but I do know they produce.

I suggest plugs as follows: Yellow/White J plugs (AKA Lucky Louies), J-11 Jointed Repala's, and riplin redfins. The problem with these plugs is that they tend to spin if trolling speeds vary from slow to fast, like if turning rather sharply to work contours. Closely watch trolling speeds and turns if using body baits.

Monday we had a 15 to 20 LB salmon break off the rigger cable after a netting attempt on a run away from the boat. Our second Electric rigger wasnt quite fast enough unfortunately it had 10 feet to go just as the salmon darted right at the canon ball! Dooooh! Oh well it always fun fighting the big ones.
