they eventually go anyway, they wait for rains or high water so they can make it way up to ensure their young are born in cleaner waters
 
It has nothing to do with cleaner water it has to do with prime gravel spawning grounds and safety for the young and a bit of instincts cause they return to aproximatly where they were born

It has nothing to do with cleaner water, they want prime gravel and sand spawning beds, and protection for there young and they always return to approximately where they were born.
 
They don't need the rain to run... there are other triggers that will send the fish upstream to spawn - the rain helps them move though.
