We tell people arounf the world that Hockey is Canada's main sport. There are approximately 2 million people who participate in hockey in Canada and over 6 million people who actively fish. So why are we the silent majority taking a position at the back of the line rather than the front?

And there's probably even more having sex, but try getting that on prime time TV. But it would certainly get more viewers than HNIC!

Good point. :D

I guess this would make a triple confirmation.
In keeping with the season I would submit that basketball was invented by a Canadian. And that NCAA March Madness is one of the greatest sporting spectaculars on TV. It started a week ago and runs until the first week of April. During a normal winter, it can kill off the whole month of March and draw us a month closer to Opening Day.
March Madness, Opening Day, It's the most wonderful time of the year :) .

Beer what? We take a position at the back of the line because you want a beer? Or you think that beer should be a national sport which would put fishing in the number 2 spot? Or are you just thirsty? Or do you think the popularity of fishing would increase with the help of beer?

Doesnt the pupularity of everything help with beer? I know the popularity of how happy I am most nights lately, it based solely on the amount of beer i drink that night, and how quick I drink em. I do know i need to slow down on it. 4-5 in 1 hour...gets me feeling pretty dam good hehe.

I hate basketball, i do not watch it, i loved it when they were on strike because my sports centre wasnt filled with basketball lol. Thats crazy to think thats theres 6 million people actively fishing. Why isnt OFF busier than?? :(

Hey Spinnin, Not saying that beer drinking is a sport, I'm well past college age  . It compliments all sports.
Porter, I am talking about US college Hoops, they don't go on strike. The players care and have something to go for. They don't become asses until they turn pro.

Yea, I would agree with that. The first point that I was trying to make was about being a silent majority. How many hockey programs are there out there compared to fishing? Or is it that the fact that fishing is not as exciting as watching hockey but rather more enjoyed by actually doing it?

Hockey will always be canada's number 1 sport, I find it hard to believe that only 2 million canadians play hockey. If anyone heard Don Cherrys rant a few weeks ago they would know that hockey teams all over the US are flooded with players from Ontario, Why you ask? Because hockey is Canada's sport! Im not sure where they would get the 6 million number from either, its pretty tough to find people who are actually interested in fishing, maybe its the number of people who have bought a rod at one time or another?

Hockey is the #1 sport and the Montreal Canadians are the #1 Team within that sport!

I think those number are highly skewed too. I'd be more willing to believe 2 million people in Ontario are involved in hockey, but not all of Canada.

How would one even track the number of those associated with fishing??? At least with hockey you have registration etc that could be tracked within reason.

No idea how you would even begin to find out how many fish.

Well all anglers should have a license, which would make us all countable. Leaving out all under 18s and over 65s.

The most popular sport ever,
Is not mentioned here.
It is more popular then hockey and fishing put together.

It's called " chesterfield checkers"

Maybe Hockey is considered number one because of the passion and enthusiasm shown for the sport. You consider all the families that get up at 5am to take their kids to the rink multiple times a week, driving all over the province. Fishing does not have the same level of competitiveness and there are not fishing schools or few fishing competitions. Maybe the difference is between a leisure sport versus a competitive sport.

I don't do ice or snow--never, never, never.

And though this may be sacrilegious (MEA CULPA!!!)--I hate the game of hockey (most professional team sports also).

Final answer...
BEER
