What size do you guys use? I've only had success with 8mm glow roe, but I've also got a pack of 10mm that I haven't really used yet.

8 or 12. I follow the advice of go bigger in dirty/darker water, otherwise I use the 8.

Anytime I use the glows it's in the 12 size. I'm also trying some of the blood dots but can't say I've used them enough to form an opinion.

8mm-10mm. Some guys run those huge 14mm too. I've never seen a fish caught with them so far lol

General question for anyone using beads:
I've picked up some 8mm and painted them up (i was bored, i think they look decent). Are most of you just running the bead and a bare hook ~2 inches below? or are any of you running the bead in conjuction with a baitied hook (with a roe bag or pink worm etc)

Thanks!!

in a pinch you can also use a jensen soft plastic egg just loop the hook through it twice, when you get a fish on you'll usually lose the egg but who cares lol

if the pom-poms that you're talking about are the ones that come in a bag with 3 different shades of orange i think you might have a hard time rigging them like a trout bead, I've tried them and found it hard to get a hook through the center of them but you can hook them a little off center and fish them like you would an egg pattern fly, as far as scent goes why don't you try anise.

I think you may be right about those pom-poms. I was thinking of threading 1 on my line with a needle. It depends on how much trouble I want to take. I mentioned cod liver oil because it would seem fairly close to salmon roe oil and I did catch a small bow last winter on a roe bag that I put a capsule in, then pin-pricked it. Salmon oil only seems to be readily available in capsules. But anise?? Anise!! I thought that was a bit strange. I mean, it’s not even close to fish oil. But then I Googled it and it seems to be a common scent to add. Which makes me wonder who the heck thought of using that first, and why??

I have been using it for a long time now....mixing up a brew with some vaseline on the stove .This consistency allows one to "smear it "on various objects (especially pom poms )and not have it disperse as quickly as straight anise, once it's been drifted a number of times.

That's a great idea, what's the ratio of anise to vaseline? and how long do you heat it?

Vaseline and anise, eh?! Gotta be careful how you say that combo---watch the pronunciation!..

Where do you buy the anise? I checked at the drugstore, no go. Health food store, maybe?

Thx for all the tips folks!

get it at the grocery store in the baking aisle "anise extract" not "anus extract" that would be gross lol sometimes it's called star anise
