Hey gang,

Just got the go ahead from the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area guys for the annual clean up. The date is November 4 / 2012. We will start at 9 am and usually takes about 2 - 3 hours, depending on how many people show up. Last year we took out lots of trash and found lots of goodies too

I will provide gloves, garbage bags, water and disinfecting gel to clean up after wards. Meet at the Toronto St. parking lot near the lake and we will split up the areas. I have a truck to move the garbage bags. Usually around 15 bags of trash get pulled out...

Any questions feel free to post here or PM.

Was down there maybe a week or so ago scoping out the creek conditions, and I did not see too much garbage. Looked like someone had already done a cleanup.

So there shouldn't be too much work to do.

I wonder what the feasibility would be of installing a garbage bin at the you know what pool. Could probably find a free bin on Kijiji, and by this time of year, it shouldn't really need emptying as it'll be mostly small tackle trash, cigarette packages and coffee cups. The idea might work, as long as no one put any fish remains in the bin.

Sounds like a great day Dozer. If it wasn't a 2 hour drive for me id come help for sure. Fish in the morning, clean, then get back to fishing.

Salmo your idea is a bit more complicated then that. It would require a heavy duty steel garbage bin, and the city would need to approve the idea because if they don't who would empty it? Ive never been to that hole so I don't know how accessible it is but it would also need to be very easliy accessible so the city forces could get their pickup within a reasonable distance.

NADO at this time of year there isn't much garbage being left around. No one from the city or MNR would remove a bin from there. Responsible anglers who don't litter and appreciate the cleanliness of a pristine section of a creek would empty it. But it wouldn't need emptying until the circus comes to town, which would probably be the April opener. To be honest I've never fished there in April or May but I would assume it gets hit pretty hard. But from now until April, I don't imagine a decent sized bin becoming filled by things like fishing line, hook packages, yarn, cigarette packs and coffee cups. That's the sort of stuff litterbugs leave strewn around the area.

Hey Dozer can you send me a PM with where to meet. Ive never fished there so I am unfamiliar of where this creek is. Id love to come out and help out and maybe enjoy some fishing after. Just have to swing it by the warder first (wife) to make sure I have that day free :)

I can probably come, but where is wilmont creek? Also is it open to fishing?

yeah salmo i noticed its much cleaner too this year but there is still lots to do, we found a nice peir net down there earlier this year.

I was there about a month ago and yeah not much junk around. I was impressed at how clean it was compared to other streams or "hidden spots". Angler_Brazil and I scouted from the tracks down half way to the mouth, not much litter.

I too noticed the same thing. Damned! someone beat us to that. Lol

Lots of garbage still @ Wilmot, some spots are downright filthy. The rain a little while ago must have brought with it some crowds.

I don't mind. Should consider taking pics of the garbage and post it on the trails there with the caption, "We cleaned your mess!" I'll have to stop off at dollarama to get one of those extended grabbers so I don't have to bend down to pick up the junk.

Grub,

That is the idea of it all, give back a little, meet new people, do some fishing... I wish there would be some more items I could supply, but its the best I could do. There are a few great guys coming out that day, some real class acts. Looking forward to meeting you there on Sunday, I just hope it isn't pouring rain...

Time to give back !! Im in !!!!! Someone grabb me a garbage pickerupper from doller rama too !! lol

You missed the part where I wanted those leaving the garbage to be aware that "We cleaned your mess!" To make them feel some guilty and to show how much garbage was there. Cleaning up after someone is not educating them to keep it that way, it sends a clear message that they can leave any junk around because someone else will get it for them. Who owns the land around the creek? It is, as far as I know public property, like a park. And what do parks have, paid grounds keepers. Anyone who regularly fishes it and sees it clean will probably assume this. I don't expect my neighbour or anyone else to go to my local park and clean it, why would anyone do that? It's city property, call the city and report the garbage and the city workers will come and do their job.

It is a good deed that much is true. But one that needs to continue till what forever? It needs to be prevented in the first place, or at the very least reduced by making people aware of the mess they created.

I hear you. Unfortunately many people who litter can't break those habits and most of the time, couldn't careless about it anyways. Anything you would say would fall on deaf ears. Enforcing it a little harder would help the situation I think, at least a bit. Giving out ridiculous fines for littering would decrease the amount of garbage for sure. If people had to pay $5,000 in fines for throwing a Timmies up on the sidewalk, I'm pretty sure we would live in a cleaner environment.

Ok so Sunday for now is looking dry, but I got myself that grabber thingy from dollarama. I also plan to use a hoop to keep the garbage bag opened. I think the only other thing I'd need are gloves.

Ready, set, clean......lol.

What about nailing a couple signs on trees. No littering..that may have a slight effect. Oh d I'll try to make it down on Sunday weather permitting. It should be a good time and a great way to give back to mother nature :)

I'm in Scarb by the bluffs anyone want to split the cost of gas I can drive.

Signs on the trees is good but can be seen as vandalism. I was thinking of some thing simple, metal rod stuck into the ground with a small sign on it. Place only on the popular spots.
