    Smelt rigs

Lol ice fishing is completely foreign territory for me. Hopefully I catch something other than a cold!

    Bass pond

Aaron, you best start hitting the books! You have a 100' x 50' ecosystem to tend to. :) *Yellow Pickerel* is a walleye, but people keep referring to them as simply pickerel for some reason. It is true, the real pickerel is a fun-sized pike. I heard they are tasty too...

    Bass pond

    Smelt rigs

Thanks BWB, looks like we are comparing notes on this one! The rig I saw on youtube was like a fun-sized perch rig tipped with those small plastics in your link. I should have most of this stuff in my panfish box. Looks pretty straightforward. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzMl51VvP-M

time to get a new casting setup

Just to add two cents: Mono on top, braid on the bottom. You can spool another reel with one or the other so you have the choice, but braid will work for either if you do not like mono. I would not go below 50lb braid anyways (= 12lb mono). The biggest concern is line diameter. 50lb is...

    Smelt rigs

Gentlemen, I have some lame noob questions, but please bare with me. :) Smelt rigs: Two dropper hooks and a sinker at the bottom? How big should the hooks and sinker be? Distance between the hooks? Yarn, small plastic waxies, micro grubs and tubes? Fish closer to the surface, or just off...

time to get a new casting setup

If you mean mono vs. fluoro and super lines, it is a matter of price point and personal preference. A lot of people are using 30 - 50lb braid. It just cost a lot of money for quality stuff. I would recommend forking out for P-Line or Suffix. Cheaper braids wear faster. Quality braid will...

time to get a new casting setup

Angler Anonymous offered pretty good gear selections. MH/F is more than enough. Anything heavier may rip the lure right out of the mouth on hookset! Save the pool cues for muskie fishing. 6'6" for accuracy, 7' for a bit more casting distance and hookset torque. Personally, I like St...

It is only a matter of time until all the bass pros start plugging coke, pepsi and RC... ;)

    Italo goes carpin

I had to google it. I had no idea he did that... that must have happened 15 years ago.

    Spiderwire XXX Supermono

If I need to save some money, Stren Original is a good option. It performs well for the price. If you want a better performing 6lb mono, try Suffix Elite. It is only a buck or two more than the Spiderwire XXX for the same spool size and a lot better quality IMO. For bigger diameters (8lb +)...

    Superstitions

Once a lure catches my biggest-to-date, its luck runs out anyways. :P Then it is replaced with a lure exactly the same... Or else the next thing I catch with it is bottom! lol

    Superstitions

Never eat until I catch a fish There is always a period when a new rod has to be 'seasoned' before it will start catching fish Hard baits must be seasoned too Firm belief fish feed the most based on the transit of the moon. All trips planned around the solunar calendar. Bit of a lunatic that...

    Go-to fishing snack

More water than I need and a Wendy's #2 classic double combo! For longer trips, it is usually pepperoni sticks, string cheese and drink boxes to peck at while on the water. Canned beans and homemade pulled pork boil bag for the campfire. A couple tallboys to wash it all down!

    Italo goes carpin

x2 Italo is not cool or extreme (he is an old man after all), but he shares his skill and experience beyond the, "buy product-x or get skunked!" like other fishing shows. He seems like a genuinely nice guy. But the fishergirl segments are creepy as hell!

    Fish and UV light

No intentions of poaching here. :) Just looking for options to see what I am doing without giving myself away to the game. Noob, the way I was to understand it, baitfish are attracted to light and of course the game fish are looking for the baitfish, but I understand white light spooks the...

    Baitcasting Reel

x3 for the Veritas. St. Croix and Browning also make decent casting rods in the $80 - $120 for more options.

    Baitcasting Reel

Heavier lures (1/4oz +) and heavier line only. Cranks, plugs, heavy jigs, and such are fished on 15 lbs and 17-20lbs if you are fishing in the weeds. Anything lighter is best fished with spinning gear.. One suggestion is get a quality reel (AA suggested a fantastic reel for the price range)...

    Fish and UV light

Does anybody have any experience fishing under UV/black light? Some say when used with florescent line and floats, it is a great way to see what you are doing without flooding the area with white light and spooking fish. Others say even UV light can spook fish. Also heard the same argument...
