New Blog About Fly Fishing in Ontario

Hey guys, Starting a blog up about my fishing adventures in Ontario. Let me know what you think about the content. All fishing locations will be kept a secret. http://suitablemusings.wordpress.com/ I was thinking of expanding the content to include guest posts. Let me know if any of you...

    Fly outfit weight

In my opinion, you won't get one rod that is perfect for all conditions. This is a generalization, mind you, since a 5wt. could work as a dry fly rod or a nymph rod. But if you wanted to get the most performance out of a rod, I'd suggest buying individual rods for those situations. For...

    Your First Fly Setup

My first setup was a 7'6" 3wt. rod made by Mark Prewitt of RDPFlyrods (www.rdpflyrods.com). Great price point for a medium fast action, mid flex rod. The workmanship is first class and Mark is open to rod customizations and personalizations. The rod casts a 3/4wt. line very smoothly. I...

so its really gonna warm up this week

Not sure about about other zones, but zone 16, most tribes are open all year for salmonids from lake Ontario to highway 2, highway 3, highway 403 or eglington, whichever is the most southerly large road/highway.

so its really gonna warm up this week

I might head out. Correct me if I'm wrong but people are talking about fishing south of the 403 or highway 2 in the GTA tribs, correct?

    casting in rivers

Trying watching Oliver Edward's movies about fly fishing. Great way to understand the basics. And his voice reminds me of David Attenborough and his narration of nature videos, very soothing.

    Steelhead

Thanks for the comments. Graham, thanks for the tips. I'm using a 9wt rod with 8lb Trilene fluorocarbon. I tie my floes with a loop knot that uses a improved clinch knot (forgot the actual name). One of the reasons I may be breaking is that the place I fish is small and has a lot of roots...

Can't post pictures for some reason, server says it is encountering errors. I will post later.

    Steelhead

Finally. My first steelhead. I get it. I understand when the steelhead runs begin, how to time a run, where the steelhead will hold and how to dangle flies in front of these hungry beasts. They are by far the most amazing freshwater fish to play and land. But I still haven't learnt how to...

Confidence for a New Fly Fisherman

Schnip, you are right. There is nothing wrong with pond trout. But if you have to go through all the adventures to find a wild river trout, it just makes it that much more gratifying and satisfying.

Confidence for a New Fly Fisherman

By the way, if anyone is as frugal and resourceful as I aim to be, and want a quick and easy side project, go by yourselves some #6 egg hooks and the smallest red pom poms from Michaels. You can tie an egg fly in less than 1 minute for less than 5 cents each. And they catch fish!

Confidence for a New Fly Fisherman

I've been meaning to bring my dad out to fly fish. From my previous post (http://www.ontariofishingforums.com/forum/topic/18000-need-help-with-teaching-a-new-fly-fisher/) I mentioned that he was new to fly fishing and I wanted to bring him out to a place where he could practice casting but also...

    My first fall brown trout

No strike indicator, I had two split shots on the leader to get the egg pattern down.

Need Help with Teaching a New Fly Fisher

Burds is closed in the winter per their website. I know Grenadier pond would be a place to go, but its just a little too urban for my comfort right now. Anyone have any recommendations? Isn't there a storm water pond in Markham that has sunfish?

Need Help with Teaching a New Fly Fisher

I have been meaning to teach my dad how to fly fish. He enjoys fishing, a la bobber fishing and waiting, and he hasn't really been able to "target" fish species and enjoy the hobby as a sport. I have recently taught him how to fly cast at a storm water retention pond, which I don't think has...

    My first fall brown trout

Fishingnoob, Part of me wants to catch a steelhead just to add to the list of species I have caught. Also, from the single brown I caught this fall and the two steelies I've managed to hook, I have to say that the steelhead have MUCH more fight in them. Having said all this, I do agree with...

    My first fall brown trout

So... I've been fly fishing a single tributary quite a bit lately in hopes of catching a steelhead. Still counting my casts one at a time. I haven't reached a thousand casts yet. Also grieving about all the flies I've lost thus far. But I think it's worth it because I did hook up on two VERY...

    new to this fly thing

Hahaha, Schnip is getting sucked into this hobby so badly. You absolutely HAVE to have each rod paired with a reel. In fact, if you are going to use different line weights for a single rod, I'd suggest you get an individual reel for each line. No excuses. Don't question the logic, just feed...
