i contacted by email councillors adam vaughan paula fletcher and michael rielh at the tpa b4 8am wed june 06.....awaiting replies.

this matter was to be voted on today june06...... guess democracy was circumvented...guess minds were already made up.....signs were already put up.

spoke to security supervisor at the city hall about demonstration permits etc......i want to use the pond at city hall...the skating rink.......with us fishing as a photo op for newspapers
he is gonna set aside some time to help me through all the paperwork.

1. City Council request that all public bodies along the lakeshore within City limits refrain from interfering with sport fishing unless the activity compromises public safety.



2. City Council establish as much as possible of the central waterfront as a 'Gone Fishing' zone.



3. City Council request the City Solicitor to review the legality of any newly‑enforced restrictions which hinder citizens from enjoying sport fishing in locations where this has been permitted in the past.

SummaryRecently, restrictions on public fishing have been enacted along portions of Toronto's waterfront, with fishing restricted to areas designated by posted signage. This is counter to existing policy permitting urban fishing in the City of Toronto provided there is no signage prohibiting fishing.



Fishing is an activity enjoyed by thousands of Torontonians every year. The right to fish can be reasonably restricted for purposes of safety at particular locations, but a patchwork of new enforcement, apparently unrelated to public safety, poses the risk that the lakeshore will be effectively taken from the public realm, enjoyed by all, to a private preserve. As a lakefront City Toronto needs to protect the right of residents to fish in Lake Ontario from public property.

So is it legal to say take my canoe/kayak up to the islands and fish the channels and area from it but not from the shore?

So who/what exactly passed this?

Probably linked to what the provincial government is doing in relation to getting a Toronto Casino setup. Ie. wanting the area to look like their distorted vision of how it should be or what not..

I searched the code from that sign and got:

§ 608-38. Fishing.
While in a park:
A. No person shall fish in an area posted to prohibit fishing;
B. No person shall store or leave any lures, bait, hooks, lines, poles or other equipment
in the park in a location or manner that may injure other persons or wildlife; and
C. All permitted fishing must be carried out in compliance with all Ministry of Natural
Resources Rules and Regulations.

This is a few years old. So to me sounds like they only gave up on this ban a couple months ago while looking for a way to gain legal grounds to enforce it. Now that they found a clear loop-hope they're going for it again.

A. No person shall fish in an area posted to prohibit fishing;

So as long as you toss a sign somewhere for any reason (extremely vague bylaw), no fishing.

This is ridiculous, fishing isn't a municipal matter to begin with.

I got the book a few days ago. It mainly talks about salmon fishing in Toronto but it also contains info on other fish too. Too bad I cannot make it out on the 12th tell me how it goes. Cheers.

I was planning on going to the Islands tomorrow morning to do some fishing before I came across this post. I had assumed the ban was on the waterfront and not the islands...

has anyone been there recently? Have they posted signs for no fishing at the Toronto Islands?

I am pretty swamped till the 13th but after that I am free, like sit on the couch all day free because I cannot fish 24/7 free. Please tell me what you need done whether it be phoning councilors, or writing emails, or even getting signatures for a petition. I was at city hall fighting for against a bylaw before, so I kinda now how it works. Also when is the committee going to vote, has it already happened? I heard somewhere that you only have to wait a year before it can be brought up again. I think this is absurd for multiple reasons, but what about handicapped anglers? I haven't done lots of exploring around fishing opportunities in Toronto, but it seems to me that the only place that is accessible to them is the harbor front and the island. Am I wrong? Lastly I want to thank tangledline for all his hard work.

Dear Mayor Rob Ford, and Toronto City Councillors,

I am writing with regards to the agenda today of "Gone Fishing", EX21.33, which will be discussed today. While that idea is promising, the fact Toronto City Parks have decided to post signage all over the Toronto Park system banning fishing while this motion was under review, it makes the current motion rather useless.

Since it simply "reaffirms" the ability to fish in the city, on property that is not posted "No Fishing", and does nothing to counter act the actions of Toronto Parks during the last week, it has become a rather useless motion.

So I have to ask, who manages this city? The Mayor along with the City Council or does each and every department get to circumvent City Hall when ever they wish to prevent motions at City Hall from being effective in their tasks?

Considering this motion was first brought up in April, and Toronto Parks decided to put up the signage and reaffirm that fishing is not allowed a mere 6 days ago to make sure that regardless of the outcome of the council's decisions there will be no fishing in Toronto. Why do we have a Mayor or Council? Its obvious at this point that the political will of the Toronto City Departments have more weight on the matter then City Hall.

So what is it going to be, will the City of Toronto's departments have the power to circumvent the decisions made in council or will Council do something about this and roll back the clock if you will to show who is responsible for the city?

Councillors voted to remove no-fishing signs recently installed by the city’s parks department along the lakeshore and approved a “Fishing Summit” on shoreline angling in the city’s downtown.

i was upset at the lack of particpation shown from the members of this site which i hold dear to my heart
