General Salmon and trout fishing questions for beginners

Is this how you guys hook roe, exposing the hook? also do you only push the hook through a little of the mesh?

i just usually go for a smaller hook and hook the bag at the tie and embedd the pointy hook in the bottom of the bag.

For clear water I use 2-4 eggs, for messy water 5-7(Salmon roe). I like to have a variety of colours and sizes just in case. White, peach would likely be the best colour this time of year and in clear water. Messy water I tie more pink and Chartruse. Always be prepard and tie extra in case you get into those 20+ fish days. With respect to hooks I use the smallest possible like #14. I usually put the point of the hook just under where I tied with spider thread or the holding knot trying not to puncture the eggs.

I see my question was somewhat addressed already in this post, Blair. I guess I'm looking for new ideas, more so than the basics.

You are using an egg loop knot which is normally used for skeined eggs without bagging first. The knot is also used for running yarn. You do not need to use this knot if you are tying your eggs in bags.

Thanks Blair I appreciate the praise, and always open for new idea's too. I like the idea of breaking open or poping an egg or two for more scent, but for some reason I think the fish don't hit my roe bag as often when I pop an egg in my scarf. I think it is just my mentality because I have hit fish with several broken eggs too. I guess personally I prefer a full bag with fresh eggs. What i usually do is bring 2 containers of roe. One a little juiced, and one more on the dry side. If I feel I need a flavor kick i just dip my eggs in the juiced container. Kinda like gulp recharge. It's funny how we all develop differn't habits, but still seem to get good results either way.

I also think confidence has a lot to do with it. If you are positive and know you are going to hit a fish, chances are you will. If you are in a rut or not so confident we tend to fish more reserved with less luck and wonder what are we doing wrong? Likely nothing is being done wrong, the fish just aren't bitting. Stay positive and always enjoy every outing and I gurantee you will catch more fish.
