What are your most effective methods to staying awake when driving long distances?

loud music? don't help.
open window? don't help.

pull over, get out, stretch leg? way better than either on top.
very short 15 minute nap? you are recharged.

If you are in an emergency where you really can't stay awake, slap yourself in the face hard! That gets the adrenaline pumping! Then, stop at the nearest coffee shop and grab an extra large coffee.

i open the window especially when its chilly. i guess pulling over aqnd streching would be good aswell. i guess the best and safest is defenitly taking a nap

I've pulled over once to have a sleep before... That worked better than trying to stay awake by far, but pulling over would be the best bet and getting out to just get some fresh air. Open the windows for sure tho and sit straight up in you chair.

Like I said... quick short nap is the best but! You really gotta get out the car and stretch out. Just simply doing that helps extremely.

So chibi, where are you planning to drive with frozenfire ?

nowhere in particular, at least not anywhere new haha.

usually when we go fishing, it's about a 1.5 hour drive (one way). on the way home, he gets tired pretty quickly. i'll drive for him if he's at that point where he knows he's going to pass out. however that won't be as convenient any longer as he recently purchased a vehicle with manual transmission. i'm planning to learn but i don't know how well that will go considering i won't be driving manual habitually.

and yes, frozenfire does the face slap often haha. i find that if we're actively speaking, listening to music that isn't mellow, it'll help. sometimes sour candy or chewing gum serves as a band-aid solution as well haha.

thanks for all the responses so far everyone =).

I remember reading some where that... talking to passengers cause more auto accident than drinking and driving.

You could pull over and do some exercise that was suggested when I read some article on how to survive working the night shift. I suppose that this will get your adrenaline pumping and make you more awake.

I'd laugh so hard if i saw some guy who pulled over to the side of the road and started doing jumping jacks. actually, i'd be pretty scared hahaha

wow...that sucks. :D
even if i were to pull over, i'd get off the highway into a small street. but yeah, now it sounds like finding a parking lot owuld be the best solution.

Thanks for letting us know, we use to stop on the side of the hiway all the time, we use to go fishing too early(place opened at 7am) we where on the road at 4am and it was only 1.5hrs away. so to pass some time we use to stop on the road instead of waiting at the destination.

If I had time I would pull into a parking lot & sleep, thats if I weren't in a rush.. If I had to really be somewhere, I would probably do the slapping thing LOl, either that or some jolt cola would do the trick, an espresso wouldn't hurt either :)

Yeah man !!! I've seen that happen many times, people need be very aware of their surroundings especially on a busy highway or on a sideroad, a lot of people normally think of the side of a highway being quite safe, same here for many years. Then in the 90's that show "REAL TV" came out, couldn't believe some of the footage they would get, I can't tell you how many times I've watched this show and I swear, I've must've seen soo many highway/sideroad crashes caught on video in that show, all of which were caught on the cops car vid camera, during a routine stop for speeding, next thing you know, here comes a 18 wheeler going at least 120 km, litterally obliterates the car that the speeder was sitting in, not even a second or two later. Makes you realize how precious life really is !!!
