Live bait

Ontario Fishing Forums

Help Support Ontario Fishing Forums:

At port D in the summer there's tons of them taking your worm along the break water. Even when you're retrieving your bait they'll snatch it when it comes near the concrete. Gives tons of fun if you wan them, not so much when you don't want them.

Yeah I don't want them.......lol. They snatch you bait before LM or walleye's even get a chance. But they do seem to be a hardy fish. We should start promoting them, sheephead, bowfin and any other course fish............lol.

For what it's worth I have found that Rockies, bluegill, and pumpkinseed all make great eating. The only bummer is that it's a bit of a pain to fillet a bunch of them but in most cases when you elect to keep a few of them instead of sportfish you're doing the lake a favour.

Rockies almost fight as hard as the blue and PS. I love UL for pansies. Yeah I can imagine cleaning a mess of them gave me hand cramps....lol. There are plenty of videos on cleaning them and crappie. The best pansies are from fast flowing water, they fight like mad, tons of fun there especially for kids.

Hey Guys:

Regarding "Bait Fish" I chopped apart the Regs and pulled a lot of that stuff out, as well as seperating ALL of the Zones.

I'll put a few below having to do with Baitfish and whatever else I can find.

More Wasted Effort & Time!!!

Me Again::rolleyes:

I went to their Site and Grabbed the "LINK" to "The Baitfish Primer" at "Fisheries and Oceans Canada"

HERE (Removed)

It should take you right to The Primer. A Lot of other good Links on there also.

Why Bother!!!

FishHawk we don't need an all out report whenever you're bladder/poop bin is full

Cat, shhhhh. Fish is probably still sleeping......lol. That's alot of cool info and it's alot easier to read then the MNR link I posted. My link didn't even group all the fishes together, they haphazardly threw a bunch into PDF. This is great stuff, better let him get his beauty sleep.......lol.

Thanks FishHawk! I was actually going to start "trapping" my own minnows this summer so this is ULTRA helpful for me. Cheers!

thanks fishhawk! That's some really great info, you took it to the next step!

Yes the number of minnows is kinda crazy, I was trapping in a pond last week for simcoe ice fishing.

We had two traps out, each ended up with about a pound and a half of minnows.

I would say 40% were sticklebacks (GRRRR fish don't like them that much), 25% dase and 25% chub. I caught a few bigger ones that looked like small bowfins and they went back in.

All the ones I didn't know went back in as well as a bunch of sticklebacks to keep up under our limit.

It turned out really well and we didn't even have any die over the day, they were free and worked well.

This was in a private pond up around newmarket at my brothers place, I think in streams and rivers you can catch siners and obviously bigger chugs and suckers.

Thanks for the Comments Guys!

Which Is A Miracle If It Does Happen!!!

I forgot to mention "Catch & Release" which is usually a Good Practice. Unless, of course you're catching them for Personal Consumption.

Personally, for me The "Catch" is where the Fun Is and the "Anticipation" of that happening.

OOPS! Gotta Go ....."Catfish"

Like the photos! What do you use for bait? Live or lures? I went from completely live bait to lures and now to a mix between both...

I'm not sure if its been mentioned or asked but I'll go ahead and pass along this tip. Hard to beat dog food for minnow bait! Cheap and effective.

Any particular brand or just any dry dog food? That's cool, thanks for the tip.

I wanted to try chumming cat food to make trout active but the Purina Cat Chow I have floats, looks stupid floating in a stream, a bunch of X and hearts.......lol.
