    A good hook sharpener

I got this one http://www.basspro.com/Rapalareg;-Hook-Sharpener/product/10203604/148571?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT originally, but didn't like the super cheap feel of it. It's basically sandpaper over a plastic mold rather than stone. I switched to something like this...

    Pike tips?

One thing I'm eager to try is using circle hooks with fluorocarbon leader for pike this spring. I'm hoping that will increase the number of times I hook their lips instead of deeper, which should make it so there are fewer teeth to rub against when the pike swings its head.

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

I have 3 rods: 7' UL rod with UL reel 7' Med Ugly Stick with Med reel 6'6" Med-Hvy rod with Baitcast reel It's the last one that I'm talking about. I only brought up the UL because I had enough comments that were assuming that the baitcaster was my only rod, and therefore had to be a...

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

Absolutely, number one is thumbing the reel which is what I'm practicing. Some of the lesser factors that heavier line will help with will be dig-in resistance (when you fight a fish hard, then your next cast backlashes) and ease of untangling a backlash. Or at least that's the consensus I've...

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

Yep, works the same as that. I bet that most reel models change from year to year more than the ambassador line has changed in the last 50.

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

Thanks Mercman, I've definitely read that page already, and many like it. I'm now just at the "practice, practice, practice" phase in the backyard shooting at a snowbank :)

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

Hey guys, appreciate the general gear advice. A few points since there seems to be some curiosity on why I'm setting up like this. I have multiple rods, so I'm not needing this rod to necessarily be a "swiss army knife / do everything" rod. I fish many species in many areas, so I gear up...

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

Hey Blair, The purpose of a leader in this case is going to be for reducing line visibility and increasing abrasion resistance. I certainly am not looking to increase my break strength :) As for the high test strength of the main line, a lot of my motivation for that is going to be resistance...

Pleuger President + Ugly Stik = good to get me started?

So I'm having a boring Friday at work, so thought I'd follow up on this nearly 1 year old post. I wanted to give my thoughts on this Ugly Stik Lite + Pflueger President combo in case anyone else is looking to get this set up. I had a fantastic opportunity to work out of a children's camp in...

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

Yeah, Ottawa river and Gatineau Park lakes. I won't be doing anywhere near enough musky targeting to warrant putting together a proper rig for hunting beasts though. I might change my mind in a few seasons, but not planning any dedicated Musky trips for 2012...

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

    Probably 70% / 20% / 10% split between LM Bass / Pike / Musky.

    What thickness for Fluoro leader?

G'Day! So I picked up my first baitcast reel, a (barely) used Ambassador C4 5601, yesterday and I'll be spooling it up with 50lb Suffix 832. Is there any hard/fast rule to determining the test strength of fluoro that I should use as a leader? -John

    Nano

I used it for about a month. Previously I was using Suffix 832. I would say it has more memory that 832, still looks like little coils when it comes off your rod , and caused me a few problems/tangles when quickly flipping the bail for a quick retrieve/hookset. All in all, a very good line...

difficult time catching a ok size fish.

This is a key thing that I've learned in my first serious season of fishing. If the fish are "scared away", they have limited places to go. Unlike you and I, they can't decide to leave the lake if boats are being loud and obnoxious. They're still in there somewhere. The trick is to find out...

    Berkley Nanofil

So far, I'm finding that it's taking awhile to break it in. I was mostly pitching weightless wacky rigs though, so that probably didn't help much. I was finding that the Nanofil was still keeping a lot of its coil once cast. So when I'd start to reel, if I didn't have much tension on the...

I'm slow on my update, CT was out of it so I had to wait until I went to LeBaron. Just bought a pack yesterday but it's still in the packaging. I'll throw it around on the weekend and report back!

Hey Redskullz, Where are you ordering blanks from? Sounds like an awesome off season hobby.

    Berkley Nanofil

Great, they've got it on sale at Canadian Tire for $14.99, and LeBaron sells it for a nickel less than that as a regular price. My fishing buddy and I are probably going to pick some up later today. I'll post back with our verdicts.

Looks like the latest and greatest superline is getting decent reviews so far. Anyone here running a spool of this yet? Curious to how it compares to mono and braid in the hands of real people (ie. not sales people). Almost every line out there boasts great castability, surprising strength...

    Learning to Fish

Hey, I'm just finishing my first season of fishing and am also 30 years old. Certainly not too old of a dog to learn a new trick. I learned what I needed to get by through youtube videos, asking questions to friends, asking questions here, and using Google anytime I come across a term I don't...
