Suggestions?

Fish too spooky? Or not enough water for them to make the run?

I'm not concerned with the cold if the fishing is good. How late in the season can you catch them?

as long as the rivers open you can fish for them but once it gets to cold your gear can ice up pretty bad but i fished the day before new years last year then but my stuff away

Spraying line conditioner on the rod and line prevents ice build up Ive heard, I wonder if thats true

ice won't be a concern this weekend.....and we have rain forcasted all day tomorrow *continues rain dance* so monday is looking promising to get out, plus its supposed to be 11-13 degrees out woohoo

yea, that sucks! its like when im stuck at work on the opening day in the spring, since i work every saturday

that sucks i have always made sure to book that day off although i might not this year i am gonna try to work as much as i can trying to save to go to Montana in the summer for a week so between that and the new gear i want i need to pull like 60 hour weeks for a while lol

A 10 ft 7 wt is a good choice for steelhead but is alittle light for salmon a 8 wt is good for both but it all depends how much you want to spend st croix is good for there price point echo make good rods and if you want to spend the money sage g looms or scott are all great rods

very true, they could charge double what they are now for st croix and still sell the rods, i have 6'6 spinning med light i use for smallmouths and its incredible, especially since i bought it new for $70

I found a couple rods that I'm looking into. What are your opinions.

10' 6 weight st croix legend ultra - $185 new
9' 6" 7 weight legend ultra- $180 new

both bran new with full warranty. What do you think would work best?

Would the 10' 6 weight have the power for steelhead?

I have the 11 foot 7 weight imperial switch rod from St.Croix matched the echo Ion reel and love it!

If you are going to go 10 feet single hand you may as well just get the switch rod and basic spey casting is not too hard to learn. The biggest thing is having the right line on the reel.

Steelhead, 6, 7, or 8 wt. I've even used a 6 wt for salmon although that was in a tiny western trib. Anyway, most fly rods will be good. It just depends what you want to spend. You could spend 150$ and get a very good rod, or you could spend 500$+ and get an amazing rod. They both work great, just depends what kind of luxury you want. Also, remember that most of the time, the heavier wt, the harder to cast.

yea, if you're going 10ft, go for the switch, if you like fly fishing, you'll eventually get into spey, a swtich is like the SUV of the fishing world.

as for the casting thing, you just need the right line for the rod, and i've recently found that going 1 wt heavier will make casting much easier

Ya I'd go for the switch rod and jmatt is right get the right line ic recommend the rio switch line it's what I use and works great now that I have the hang of Spey casting I'm looking a skagit line

I find 6 weight is difficult to properly cast long with sink tips and mend line...a fast action 7 does this ...I think with a 10 ft.7 wt. I can reach all water in the city however once the grand ,saugeen or other larger waters are in front the switch at 11' can do it all ...watch out for the switch on the city waters as it is strange to overhand cast

I went by Sail and I had a look at some of the rods, the closest to what I was looking for was a 9' 7wt sage flight and a st croix imperial 9' 8wt

They didnt have any 10' rods in my price range- all 350+

Im thinking maybe the 8 wt wont be a bad idea since I can use it for salmon also, What do you think?

Will I be at a disadvantage with the shorter 9' or will it also come in handy being a foot shorter for the tribs in the gta, I can look into a longer spey rod in future for bigger water. As im just starting I dont wanna break the bank at this point, I want to get more experience with a good rod that I can use frequently to start with
