an 8wt is a very versatile rod, usable for all species of fish, you'll be fine with a 9ft rod, theres only a few rivers where the 10ft and longer would come in handy, but it's definately not a requirement (the grand, notty and saugeen come to mind) all of my fly rods are 9ft, also check out bass pro shop since i see you're in vaughan :p

Thanks gents, They have a 9' 8wt imperial I can get for 199- 15% ill snag that tomorrow! Any opinions on reels and line? im gonna buy them also since they have the 15% off sale at sail lol

In etobicoke they have a 9'6 8 wt on sale also, i dont know if that would be better suited. what do you think?

not sure what you're budget is on reels, but check ross reels flyrise, retails around $100, orvis, sage, lamson all make cheaper reels as well, around $150, as for line, floating, 9wt(if going with the 8wt rod), i myself like scientific anglers, and i know Mad prefers Rio

again jmatt is right i use mostly ross and lamson and are great reels i have a few different ross models and 2 lamson konics for my light gear

Go for THE BEST line they have. Rio makes the best, and the one thats about $75 is probably the best fly line in the world. For the reel, a large arbour reel is probably needed for what you want it for. The fly line is more important than the reel.

ex. If i had $1000 to spend on a fly rod, reel, and line, i would spend $750 on the rod, $100 on the line, and $150 on the reel.

FOR THE ROD... I would actually go with the imperial, because it sounds like your going to be fishing small creeks. If i'm wrong about the size of creeks you're fishing then go with the one in etobicoke.

About $30-$45 for the scientific angler. The rio casts better and floats longer.

so its a floating WF line correct?

Also looking on sails website I see they have both rio and scientific angler around the 65 dollar range. Rio had a gold line and a steelhead and salmon line, which one would I need, as this rod is a 8wt and primiarly will be used for steelhead and salmon

for the most part the SA line is around $80, i mean i can find rio line at $30 too, but lets compare apples to apples
http://www.basspro.com/Scientific-Anglers-Mastery-GPX-Fly-Line/product/21622/ is the line i use most

I saw this line also.. both the rio gold and SA gpx are 65 bucks at sail - 15%.

I appreciate everyones replies and help. I will be making the purchase tomorrow and posting pictures!

I would go with a 7wt. This is what I use for steelhead, coho, sockeye, chum salmon and large rainbows. Very versitile and can handle big fish. I use thsi rod for larger fish and then a 5wt for smaller rainbows and grayling. I have always used Rio lines and haven't got a bad thing to say. I just loaded my Ross vexsis 4 with Rio indicator line. Should work great for they type of trout fishing I do on the Kenai river.
