Hey FD, was that you and your buddy at the western trib this past Saturday landing that insane female chrome in the pool between the 2 rapids?

I recognize the Imperial Trooper gear and your buddy pulling out the DSLR.

I joined you guys late and was disgusted at the 2 meat hunters on the west-shore whom both had 2 bows strung up.

Out of curiosity, why where you disgusted? Clearly they where within their legal limit if they had 2 apiece strung up, And after all, fishing IS a bloodsport! I'll be frank, we couldn't kill these fish off when the limit was 5 and everyone kept what they caught, and I've been at this more than 25 years now.. It's unlikely that a few guys killing the odd fish will do much harm overall. Who knows what their purpose was. I keep very few fish these days but if I need to bonk a hen for eggs, it's getting bonked, and I personally don't care what anyone thinks. And if some dude wants to fil his limit to eat, that doesn't bother me in the least. They pay for a license, it's legal and they can do what they want within the law!

If everyone were to do that there will be no more Steelhead left to catch. It happened to the Atlantics. One popular trib gets about 12,000. If 100 healthy fish were to be kept every year the trib could eventually be screwed. The one I'm thinking of has already lost thousands. The MNR doesn't seem to care much. There's a reason people here will often go to New York.

Agree that they are within Regs for 2/Sports and 1/Cons but when all 4 bows are in the category of 6-10+ pound mature multi-year spawners size, it's my personal disgust seeing this happen.

I tried to educate one of them and informed him that there are MOE guidelines on the size/species of fish to keep/eat based on Lake/Trib and that he should read up on it.

I have seen it too many times where several anglers who treat the rivers like their personal fish market. I have witnessed 2 anglers in particular who would harvest 2 steels each for everyday of the week I was fishing.

This is only what I have seen that week I was off steelheading last November. Would not surprise me if they kept more for the other days I was not in the river.

KUDOS to you Porkpie for being a selective harvesting angler.

The real problem is with the limits in the Regs and the lack of enforcement.

i think everyones wish here is that the guys filling thier truck with fish understand that the resource is depleting faster than it is being renewed. taking a fish home here and there and throwing back the small ones is great but taking fish home to stock the freezer is short term fun with long term, irreversable, reprocussions. hopefully we wont be telling our kids about these fish we used to catch in the rivers and now only at burds fish pond , or eat from the river instead of only at longos.my humble opinion

Factory fish farming and factory farming in general are much bigger threats to our fisheries and other aspects of our environment than anyone harvesting their limits.

Resource extraction and industrial manufacturing are huge threats too.

I am all for conservation but I think it is far better for the environment to keep a few small non-spawning or old and unhealthy fish than to support factory farmers... whether that's pork, cattle, or salmon. Unless you get your meat from an organic farmer or you are a vegetarian you may as well keep a few instead of going to the grocery store.

I also love the taste of fresh fish that I catch myself so maybe I'm biased but I do some research here and there and it has all confirmed the above so far.

Back to regularly scheduled program...more fresh chromes from my "Twas the Night Before Steelheading" post.

Fellas,

I am not going to argue with you, however I wonder how long you have been steelheading. I suspect probably for the most part less than ten years. Clearly none of you remember the days when nearly every Georgian bay or Huron fish that was caught was killed. Clearly you've never seen several hundred caught and kept at the Ganny in a day. When I first started, this was the norm, and the fish are still here. Yes the limits have been reduced, yes a lot of angling organizations have done a lot of good work, but the fish are hardy! The limits as they are set now, are quite reasonable and it's doubtful they are having much impact on the fishery! If someone is keeping fish to eat, and staying within their possession limits at all times the. I am all for it! I'm a pickerel or panfish man myself for the plate but if someone wants to eat trout every week... Fill yer boots. Anyone over limiting, or keeping greater than their possession limits should be dealt with accordingly! There is too much emphasis out on this C.P.R b.s. there is nothing wrong with catch and release, until it becomes overbearing. No harm comes from keeping fish within the law!

I have heard many stories of " i remember when you could literally walk across the salmon/ trout there were so many" "wow you remember when there were fish here?" --the reason the limits were set is because people filled thier freezers with fish--gluttony created these regulations---in a percentage if they have gone down by 40%(for arguments sake) and they are not being renewed at even close to the depeletion rate wouldnt you agree that in a short while(relative to the world) we will be hanving this convo at a longos eating a 74 dollar piece of salmon or trout?

yup that was me  I believe you helped me hold my rod while my buddy was taking a picture of me.Good running into u again i'm sure i'll see you again  Wasn't pleased about the guys on the other side but they are allowed to keep their limit if they want. Those fish were easy 8lb+ they must have tasted good.

I got into this one computer store and they have this jvc waterproof point & shoot / video cam for $79. this would be good in water. rubber handles too.

a few shots of some of myself and a buddy's catches from the lower niagara late dec/early jan. our first year fishing with a float on spinning gear. took a couple skunks but we are getting the hang of it. love the mixed bag the lower offers.
